Hello Pirate fans!!

WOW - what a great day it has been for the Pirate Nation. What's so great about you ask? Well today was the 11th Annual "Meet the Pirates" luncheon, which was held the Murphy Center's Harvey Banquet Hall.

Just over 400 friends, supporters and family members of the baseball program gathered this morning in anticipation of hearing what Head Coach Billy Godwin had to say about his 2011 team. But the fans were treated to some special guest speakers, as the sixth-year skipper changed up the format of the program and allowed all seven seniors a chance to address the crowd.

After brief introductions by the coaching staff, support staff and players, Godwin turned the program over to his senior class, which consists of Mike Anderson, Austin Homan, Seth Maness, Brad Mincey, Seth Simmons, Trent Whitehead and Zach Woods.

These seven young men, who have accounted for 120 wins over the last three years, spoke on a variety of topics:

  • Why I Chose ECU (Anderson)
  • Positive Impact of ECU's fans (Maness)
  • Overview of the Pitching (Whitehead)
  • Overview of the offense (Woods)
  • Overview of the Defense (Simmons)
  • Goals and Expectations of the Team (Mincey)
  • The ECU Baseball Experience (Homan)

After nearly 30 minutes of laughter and applause, it was time to unveil who would wear the honorary No. 23 jersey, which was the number worn by the late ECU Head Coach Keith LeClair throughout his coaching and playing career.

Godwin introduced former No. 23 recipients Brian Cavanaugh (2005) and Brandon Henderson (2009), who each gave near tearful insights of what wearing this jersey means to each of them, their families and the Pirate Nation. And for the second-straight year, Henderson revealed that Austin Homan would once again wear No. 23 when he takes the field for the Pirates in 2011.

At the conclusion of the program, the 2011 Pirates signed autographs and interacted with the group for 30 minutes before heading over to Clark-LeClair Stadium to prepare for their intra-squad scrimmage.

On a personal note - I have been fortunate to work with the baseball team for nearly nine years and have attended all 11 Meet the Pirates events, and this by far was the best of the bunch. So, a special THANK YOU goes out to Michael Weller, Scott Lane and all of their staff members for a job well done.

As always, many thanks for your support of ECU Athletics and if you have any blog ideas or comments, please feel free to share them with us at (
