Well just as East Carolina prepares for their season opener next week against Youngstown State, several former Pirates will be hitting the diamond as well pursuing their dreams of playing in the Major Leagues.
A pair of former Pirates (Ricky Brooks/2003-05 and Dale Mollenhauer/2005-07) will start the 2011 season in Triple-A after being selected in the Rule 5 Draft Triple-A phase on December 9, 2010.
The Rule 5 draft, which typically occurs each year in December, at the annual Winter Meeting of general managers, aims to prevent teams from stockpiling too many young players on their minor league affiliate teams when other teams would be willing to have them play in the majors. The Rule 5 Draft is named for its place in The Official Professional Baseball Rules Book. The June Rule 4 draft, known as simply "the draft," "amateur draft," or "first year player draft", is a distinctly different process in which teams select high school and college players.
Nine other Pirates will join Brooks and Mollenhauer on the diamond in 2011 (seven players and two coaches/managers).
