The 10th Inning (Week 12 Recap)

East Carolina recorded its fourth Conference USA series win taking 2 of 3 games from Marshall over the weekend. The Pirates used a pair of impressive ninth inning rallies including erasing a six-run deficit in the series opener scoring five two-out runs. On Sunday, the Pirates scored three runs in the top half of the ninth for its 30th win of the season when Jonathan Holt crossed home on a suicide squeeze off the bat of Philip Clark.

The Pirates will play four games this week with the first coming at Five County Stadium (home of the Carolina Mudcats) in Zebulon, N.C. against Wake Forest before closing out its last home weekend series against Delaware State in non-conference action. Saturday's game against the Hornets has been designated as Senior Day and ECU will honor seven seniors (Mike Anderson, Austin Homan, Seth Maness, Brad Mincey, Seth Simmons, Trent Whitehead and Zach Woods) prior to the start of the game.

Pirate Hitter-of-the-Week
Jonathan Holt, Freshman, OF
Holt batted 1.000 on the weekend recording a pair of pinch hit singles in both of ECU's come from behind wins on the road against Marshall ... Trailing 8-3 with two-out, the freshman from Clemmons, N.C. drove a bases loaded single up the middle scoring Zach Wright and Ben Fultz to keep ECU's six-run inning alive where the tied the game in the ninth and won in the 10th, 9-8 ... He followed that with another RBI base hit up the middle that scored Joshua Lovick from second base to tie the game at four in the ninth ... After stealing his first collegiate base, Holt moved to third on a wild pitch and scored the game winning run on a suicide squeeze off the bat of Philip Clark to complete ECU's second comeback of the weekend ... As a pinch hitter this season, Holt is 5-for-7 (.714) with four RBI ... Three of his five base hits have come during the Pirates last at-bat of a game with two of those coming with two outs to extend the frame ... On the season he is batting .345 (10-for-29) with eight RBI and five runs scored.

Pirate Pitcher-of-the-Week
Shawn Armstrong, Sophomore, RHP
Armstrong picked up his third win of the season and the series clinching win at Marshall ... The right-hander worked four innings of shutout relief allowing one hit and striking out seven ... He entered the game in the sixth frame facing the heart of Marshall's lineup and recorded a pair of punch outs ... Armstrong followed that with a two more strikeouts in the seventh, one in the eighth and after ECU took its first lead of the game, fanned 2 of 3 batters faced to get the win ... In all he faced 13 batters retiring eight in a row before surrendering a two-out single to Kenny Socorro ... He then promptly retired the final four hitters for the win ... Armstrong owns a 3-1 record on the season in 13 appearances (5 starts) ... He has fanned 37, walked 17 and has allowed 19 runs (15 earned) on 29 hits in 33.0 innings for a 4.09 ERA.
