Every year before the start of the baseball season, one player is chosen at the annual "Meet the Pirates" fan session to wear East Carolina's honorary No. 23 jersey and on Feb. 5, senior Austin Homan became the first two-time recipient and eighth Pirate to wear the honorary No. 23 jersey.
The No. 23 jersey, which was the number worn by the late ECU Head Coach Keith LeClair throughout his coaching and playing career, became an honorary number for the Pirate baseball program in 2003.
Following the 2010 season where Homan set career-highs in hits (40), doubles (7) RBI (28) and belted his first collegiate home run against Conference USA foe Tulane, the Pirates top utility man was limited in action due to an injury.
The State College, Pa. native started 10-of-28 games as a senior batting .236 (13-for-55) with nine RBI, eight runs and belted his second career home run against Delaware State on May 13, where he was 1-for-3 with three RBI and scored a pair of runs. During his career, Homan was a two-time team captain and four-year letterwinner who started 60-of-132 games where he batted .304 (84-for-276) with 61 RBI, 13 doubles and 52 runs scored.
Off the field, he excelled in the classroom and was named to the 2011 C-USA All-Academic Team. He was a five-time C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll recipient, 2011 C-USA Commissioner's Academic Medal Winner and was named to the ECU Director of Athletics Honor Roll 11 consecutive semesters. In May of 2011 he earned his bachelor's degree in sports studies and is currently pursuing his master's in recreation and park management.
