Opening Day is the start of all things new. It's a chance to wipe the slate clean from the previous season and start fresh.
"You always get a special kick on opening day, no matter how many you go through. You look forward to it like a birthday party when you're a kid. You think something wonderful is going to happen." - Joe Dimaggio, Hall of Famer and nine-time World Series Champion with the New York Yankees
Jack Reinheimer will always remember Opening Day from 2012 at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium. The Charlotte, N.C. native was coming off a stellar rookie season in 2011 where he batted .311 with four doubles and 23 RBI on his way to Conference USA All-Freshman Team honors.
As the 2012 season got underway, you couldn't have scripted a better start for his sophomore campaign. Hosting Milwaukee in the season opener on Feb. 17, Reinheimer stepped into the batters box as the Pirates' leadoff hitter for the first time in his career. In the bottom of the first inning, he set the tone in ECU's 4-0 victory, by homering on the first pitch thrown to a Pirate in 2012 - his first collegiate home run.
Reinheimer took a first pitch offering from Eric Semmelhack sending a looping long fly ball over the wall in left-center field for an immediate 1-0 ECU lead.
"I was just looking for a good fastball to hit and I got one and it found the barrel," Reinheimer said of his first career collegiate homer. "That's the best way to start the season."
In the bottom of the third inning, he reached on an infield bunt single to third for his second base hit of the contest. After a pair of groundouts in the fourth and sixth frames, Reinheimer capped off Opening Day with a walk in eighth and finished the contest going 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored.
Reinheimer continued his hot start the following day driving in three runs in game one of a doubleheader against Milwaukee (Feb. 18) and at Old Dominion (Feb. 22) he belted his second round tripper of the season and his career. Reinheimer would close out the year setting career-highs in games played (61), hits (70), runs (33), doubles (11), total bases (89) and stolen bases (nine).
