On the heels of Jay Cannon's walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth against Penn State on Friday, Mar. 16, the Pirates found themselves once again in a dogfight with the Nittany Lions in game two of the three game series at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium.
Trailing 5-1 going into the ninth frame on Saturday, which was St. Patrick's Day, the Pirates found themselves down to their final strike on two occasions but managed to tie the game at five forcing extra innings and claiming a series win in the 10th stanza.
Nick Thompson, who pinch hit for Ben Fultz to start the ninth inning, ground out to short for the first out. Jonathan Holt followed with a pinch hit walk in place of Jack Reinheimer and ended up on third after a wild pitch and a Bryan Bass single to right field. Timothy Younger struck out swinging for the second out after Penn State made a pitching change.
Down to their final out, Corey Thompson stepped up to the plate with runners on second and third. The Apex, N.C. native quickly got behind in the count before lifting a Casey Kulina 1-2 offering that hit off the top of the left field wall, pulling the Pirates within one, 5-4.
With the crown on their feet, John Wooten would step into the box doing everything he could to keep the inning alive. The Goldsboro, N.C. native, who was 0-for-4 on the afternoon, took the first pitch for a ball. After a called strike evened the count at 1-1, Wooten took two more pitches and was sitting in a favorable 3-1 count. He fouled off the next pitch leaving him and the Pirates down to their last strike for the second time in the inning. Kulina fired a fastball towards the inner-half of the plate, where Wooten turned on the pitch sending it laser shot over the left field wall sending the game to extra innings.
In the bottom of the 10th, Zach Wright led off with a walk and took second on Jay Cannon's sac bunt back to the mound. Philip Clark, who had six career game-winning RBI at the time, hit a high chopper to second base where he forced Luis Montesinos to make a quick throw, which sailed over Jordan Steranka's head at first scoring Wright for the Pirates second-straight walk-off win.
Though Clark wasn't credited with the game-winning RBI, his speed down the first base line caused havoc for the Nittany Lions defense and gave the Pirates a much-needed series win. The next day ECU would complete the sweep of Penn State taking the third game 7-4.
