If there was one pitcher on the team last year that just had bad luck despite his pitching performances on the mound, senior Kevin Brandt was that guy. The left-hander from Fuquay-Varina, N.C. tossed four complete games to lead the club and Conference USA - all in losing efforts.
Sporting a 3-1 record entering league play, Brandt tossed his first complete game of the season at No. 19 UCF allowing just two runs (one earned) on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks in a 2-1 loss.
Four weeks later he was out-dueled by Rice hurler Matthew Reckling in a battle of Top-25 squads. Once again Brandt allowed a pair of runs (both earned) on six hits with a strikeout and a pair of walks. On any other night that would have been enough to secure a victory over the No. 7 team in the land, but Reckling was in a zone allowing just one hit over nine full frames with 10 punch-outs in the Owls' 2-0 victory.
On May 11, Brandt was again sharp in his outing against Southern Miss. However, Andrew Pierce was just a little better tossing a three-hit complete game shutout with 11 strikeouts. ECU's lefty also allowed just three hits, but a throwing error in the seventh frame by Corey Thompson and an RBI single up the middle by second baseman Isaac Rodriguez gave the Golden Eagles a late 1-0 lead, which they would not relinquish.
Brandt's final complete game effort came during the 2012 C-USA Championships in Pearl, Miss. Against Tulane, he allowed four runs (two earned) on eight hits with three strikeouts in eight innings of work. Once again errors cost the Pirates late in the contest as the Green Wave scored two runs in the sixth on back-to-back errors from the left side of the infield.
Despite the four close call set backs, Brandt earned all-conference honors for the second-time in his career taking home first-team accolades in 2012. He ranked 14th nationally in starts (16) and 42nd in complete games, while ranking among the league leaders in inning pitched (1st/106.1), pickoffs (1st/nine), starts (1st), ERA (3rd/2.12), wins (t5th/seven), earned runs allowed (t7th/25) and opposing batting average (10th/.237).
