IRVING, Texas - East Carolina senior Zach Woods was named Conference USA Pitcher-of-the-Week league officials announced Monday. For Woods it is his second career honor and ECU's third of the season (Seth Maness/Mar. 7, Kevin Brandt/Mar. 21).
East Carolina recorded its third non-conference series sweep over the weekend and posted a perfect 4-0 week improving its record to 34-17. The Pirates pitching staff tossed a pair of shutouts and allowed just two runs in four games sporting a 0.50 ERA.
East Carolina recorded its fourth Conference USA series win taking 2 of 3 games from Marshall over the weekend. The Pirates used a pair of impressive ninth inning rallies including erasing a six-run deficit in the series opener scoring five two-out runs. On Sunday, the Pirates scored three runs in the top half of the ninth for its 30th win of the season when Jonathan Holt crossed home on a suicide squeeze off the bat of Philip Clark.
East Carolina managed to salvage game three of the Conference USA series against No. 15 Southern Miss over the weekend, 7-6. In arguably their most difficult week of the season, the Pirates hosted four games against nationally-ranked teams going 1-3. Seth Maness (6-3, 1.93 ERA) picked up the lone win in his return back to the mound tossing four scoreless innings Sunday afternoon, while John Wooten led the club with a .467 (7-for-15) average.
East Carolina picked up its second-straight Conference USA series win over the weekend at Houston. Seth Simmons (5-1, 0.41 ERA) and Shawn Armstrong (2-1, 4.26 ERA) notched wins for the Pirates over the Cougars, while senior Trent Whitehead led the team offensively with a .474 average where he was 9-for-19 with two home runs and a team-best eight RBI.
The Pirates have arguably their most difficult week of the season approaching as they will travel to former Colonial Athletic Association foe Old Dominion for a Tuesday night game, before returning to Lewis Field at Clark-LeClair Stadium for the first of four consecutive games against nationally ranked teams (North Carolina/April 27 and Southern Miss/April 29-May 1).
East Carolina picked up its second series win in Conference USA action this past weekend taking a home series from UCF. Seth Maness (5-3, 2.05 ERA) and Kevin Brandt (5-0, 1.38 ERA) notched wins for the Pirates over the Knights, while freshman Jack Reinheimer led the team offensively with a .526 average where he was 10-for-19 with a team-best four RBI.
The Pirates have a yet another difficult week as they will play four games in five days which includes a Tuesday night match-up at home against instate rival UNC Wilmington (6 p.m. EST) before heading to Houston, Texas for a three-game league series against Houston that starts Thursday, April 21 (7:30 p.m. EST).
A program-best 19 ECU baseball players were named to the 2010-11 Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll the league announced on Tuesday, April. 12.
East Carolina managed to record just a pair of wins on the week defeating Elon 7-0 at home during midweek action before taking the series finale from No. 21 Rice, 7-3. The Pirates' three losses were by a combined five runs falling to instate rival N.C. State 4-2 and dropping the first two games of a three-game Conference USA series to the Owls 2-1 and 5-3 in 10 innings.
The Pirates have another big week ahead of them as they travel to instate rival and sixth-ranked North Carolina for a midweek game (6 p.m. EST) and then welcome in UCF for a three-game league series starting Friday, April 15 at 6 p.m. (EST).
East Carolina junior Kevin Brandt was named to the College Baseball Foundation National All-Star Team the organization announced on March 24. For Brandt it is his second career honor and first of the 2011 season.
The East Carolina University Athletics office has announced that Saturday, March 26 has been designated as Little League Day at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium.
