Student-Athletes To Be Honored For Academic Achievements
Feb. 20, 2007 Greenville, N.C. - A total of 309 East Carolina University student-athletes, cheerleaders and dance team members will be recognized at halftime of the men's basketball game against Marshall Wednesday at Minges Coliseum as part of WINS-Day (Winners IN School). ECU students are being honored for academic distinction, earning selection to the athletics director's honor roll during the 2006 calendar year (spring, fall semesters). Last spring, a record 49 percent of student-athletes earned a 3.00 or better grade point average. In all, nine teams possessed team GPA of 3.00 or better. During the fall, 48 percent of student-athletes earned a 3.00 or better GPA and 10 squads turned in a team semester GPA of 3.00 or better. The Pirate women's golf team will be recognized as the 2006 recipient of the C-USA Sport Academic Award. They will also be recognized as the 2006 Student Development Life Skills Award Recipient, which also includes a $1,000 award given annually by the ECU Student Development Office to the team that best exemplifies a commitment to academics, community service and personal and career development. The award money is used to assist the team in the purchase of equipment and with team travel. Heidi Krug, a graduating senior on the volleyball team, will be honored as the 2006 Conference USA Scholar-Athlete-of-the-Year Award winner. All faculty and staff in attendance will be recognized as playing a vital role in their students' success and will be rewarded with free admission to the game by showing their OneCard. Guests accompanying a faculty or staff member may receive admission for just $5.00 a ticket. Students are named to the list by earning a semester GPA of 3.00 or better.
