GREENVILLE, N.C. - Shelley Binegar has been appointed to the newly-created position of associate athletics director for external operations at East Carolina University according to an announcement from athletics director Jeff Compher Friday.
Beginning July 15, Binegar will serve ECU in a supervisory capacity on the administrative staff, coordinating and overseeing all marketing, promotional, ticketing, video and media relations efforts for East Carolina's 19 intercollegiate athletic programs, while also acting as the department's top liaison with IMG College.
Her acceptance of the new post completes a six-year stay at Northern Illinois, where she recently served as associate athletics director for development and marketing since 2010. Her leadership in external relations and revenue generation resulted in significant increases in football ticket sales, donor membership and dollars raised through the Huskie Athletic Support Fund (HASF).
"Shelley is a talented professional who I have been fortunate to work with for the last five years," Compher said. "She is an energetic 'can do' type of person who has tremendous experience in the external areas that she will oversee. I'm confident that she will add a great deal to our team and will continue to build on and work with the passionate fan base that defines ECU."
Binegar arrived at NIU in 2007 as assistant athletics director for development and provided direct oversight to the department's fundraising arm, that included its annual fund drive, hospitality, special events, benefit allocation and guidelines, VIP premium seating and donor communication initiatives and mechanisms.
In 2009, one year after Compher's arrival as athletics director at Northern Illinois, she was promoted to assistant athletics director of development and marketing, and charged with the task of coordinating a joint collaborative working relationship between the HASF, marketing, promotions and ticket operations.
In addition to her development and fundraising duties, Binegar also held responsibility as the sport administrator for the Huskie men's and women's golf programs, played an integral role as a committee member that developed NIU's three-year strategic plan and served as the university's licensing director since 2009.
She was appointed Northern Illinois' top administrative contact for all bowl games, including the 2013 Orange Bowl that was the culmination of the Huskies' unprecedented run to a Bowl Championship Series (BCS) berth. Furthermore, Binegar also directed on-campus postseason competition such as the 2008 Mid-American Conference Men's Tennis Championships and the 2012 MAC Men's Golf Championships.
Binegar also made many contributions to the community during her time at NIU, serving on the Board of Directors for both the Family Service Agency and Convention and Visitor's Bureau of DeKalb County.
Prior to her arrival at NIU, Binegar spent three and a half years as the assistant athletics director at Florida Atlantic University, where she oversaw the Owl Club, annual giving, special events and ticket operations. During her tenure, she helped increase Owl Club Membership by 130% and event revenue by 150%.
She earned her first full-time position in 2000 as director of ticket operations at Ohio University in her hometown of Athens before her move to Florida in 2004. She also spent a year working in the Wisconsin ticket office as a staff assistant.
Binegar, 37, earned a bachelor of education degree in sport management from Bowling Green State University in 1998 before adding a master's of sports administration from Ohio in 1999. She is a member of the National Association of Athletic Development Directors (NAADD).
