William M.A. "Bill" Greene, a 1943 ECTC graduate, was a member of ECU's only undefeated football team-the 1941 "7-0" Pirates. In addition to playing football in 1940-41, Greene also played basketball for two seasons.
After graduating from East Carolina, Greene served for 30 years in the United States Navy. While on active duty in the U.S. Navy, Greene commanded four different ships and served at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., as an instructor and football coach. After retiring from the Navy from which he received the Bronze Star Medal for service in the Vietnam conflict, he served as Executive Director of the North Carolina State Ports Authority from 1977-85.
Greene has stayed active at East Carolina, helping to organize the annual reunion of the 1941 team. In 2001, the team celebrated its 60 year reunion. Greene also served as the chairman for the 1943 ECTC class reunion committee and was active in the initiation of the John B. Christenbury Memorial Alumni Honors Scholarship which is named for his former coach.
