Catherine Bolton helped to build the foundation of a strong women's athletic program at ECU. She served as ECU's first women's basketball coach from 1969-78. During her coaching stint, Bolton's teams had eight winning seasons, and compiled a 103-51 overall record.

The most successful women's basketball season under Bolton was the 1972-73 season when the Lady Pirates were undefeated in regular season play, won the state championship, the regional championship and participated in the national tournament.

During her years as ECU's head coach, Bolton coached fellow Hall of Famer members Sheilah Cotten, Debbie Freeman and Rosie Thompson.

Bolton also served as the head coach of ECU's field hockey, gymnastics and tennis teams from 1969-75 and as head volleyball coach in 1975 and 1976.
