During her coaching career at East Carolina from 1978-84, Cathy Andruzzi made a great impact on the Lady Pirate basketball program. Andruzzi guided ECU to its first-ever AP Top 25 ranking and three postseason appearances in her six seasons at East Carolina. While with the Pirates, she amassed a 105-66 (.614) record, which ranked as second-most wins in Pirate history upon her departure. Under her guidance, the Lady Pirates reached the 1984 ECAC Championship game while, in 1983, Mary Denkler became the team's first-ever All-America selection.
Andruzzi pioneered a season ticket program that broke the school's previous attendance record for men's and women's basketball. Also during her stint at ECU, she broke new ground in the media industry, serving as creator, executive producer and on-air talent for The Cathy Andruzzi Show, the nation's first weekly women's basketball television and radio show.
