Charlie Adams played three years at East Carolina under fellow Hall-of-Famer, Howard Porter and helped lead the Pirates to a 41-29 cumulative record during that span. He earned his bachelor's degree in 1959 and his master's in 1962 from East Carolina.

Adams went on to coach at Cary High School from 1962-1966 and was athletics director, dean of men and assistant principal at Garner High School from 1966-67. He then began working for the North Carolina High School Athletic Association and has served as its executive director since 1984.
