His first year at East Carolina, Kepley was selected as the team's Most Outstanding Freshman. He received the national defensive player-of-the-week award in 1973 and was a three-time All-Southern Conference selection and two-time all-state player.

Kepley was given then nickname "Captain Crunch" for his amazing defensive plays and as linebacker he anchored the "Wild Dogs" (the defensive unit's moniker). He went on to play for the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League (CFL) and became a six-time Grey Cup Champion. In 1996, Kepley was elected into the CFL Hall of Fame.
