Dick Cherry was one of the finest quarterbacks in East Carolina history, playing for
the Pirate football team in the 1952-56 under ECU Hall of Fame coach Jack Boone.
In 1953, Cherry had an outstanding year for the Pirates. He threw a record 16
touchdown passes that season, including setting a school record with four TD passes
against Appalachian State on Oct. 31, 1953. He completed passes totaling 253 yards
in one game.
During his career, Cherry was named as an all-conference selection three times,
while also earning all-state and honorable mention All-America honors in 1953.
