Howard Porter
Inducted 1983 Hometown: Daytona Beach, Fla. Positions: Basketball Coach (1947-59), Golf & Tennis Coach (1951-54) Howard Porter left his mark at East Carolina by being the all-time winningest coach in men's basketball. He coached three sports: men's basketball, golf and tennis while at ECU from 1946-1970. Porter coached in more games and had more wins than any other East Carolina basketball coach (183-101). Twice, Porter led East Carolina to North State Conference Championships. His 1953-54 team was the best in school history with a 23-2 record and earned a trip to the national championships in NAIA. During his 12 year tenure as basketball coach, Porter never had a losing season. |
