Dr. Leo Jenkins

Chancellor (1960-78)
Dr. Leo Jenkins came to East Carolina as Dean of East Carolina College in 1947
and eventually Vice President (1957-60) before being named Chancellor of the
University.
Jenkins' had a strong interest in intercollegiate athletics and was a member of
many athletic organizations including the Triangle Chapter of the National Football Hall
of Fame, of which he was the director.
Jenkins was instrumental in the building of Ficklen Stadium, Minges Coliseum,
Harrington Field and Bunting Field.
During his tenure, East Carolina grew to University status and it was under Jenkins'
direct leadership and largely at his personal direction that the former small, regional,
liberal arts college developed into a large, multi-faceted comprehensive university with
the third-largest student enrollment in North Carolina.
