Otis Melvin, a 1981 ECU graduate, earned several track and field All-America Awards, as he was a standout sprinter for the Pirates from 1977-80.

In 1979, Melvin earned All-America honors in the 200 meters at the NCAA outdoor championships. In 1980 Melvin earned his second All-America honor as a member of the 4 X 400 meter relay team at the indoor championships. Melvin, coached by current ECU men's track coach Bill Carson, performed as one of the nation's top sprinters with his selection to the U.S. team at the World University Games in 1979. He was also a finalist at the 1980 Olympic Trials.

During his collegiate career, Melvin held the ECU records in the 200 and 400 meters and was a member of the record-breaking 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 meter relay teams.
