Butch Colson won four letters in football at East Carolina University from 1966 to
1969. In hie first year on the freshman team, he rushed for 195 yards and passed for
48 more from his fullback spot.
During his sophomore year in 1967, Colson was listed as a backup when
the Pirates opened the season at William & Mary. But when the starting fullback
suffered a broken leg early in the game, Colson came on the field and promptly
started a record-setting career.
He gained 1,135 yards that season, scored five touchdowns and was named as the
Southern Conference Player-of-the-Year.
Colson established the ECU record for most carries in one game (41) by a senior in 1969. He finished his career with 2,512 yards rushing and 3,025 total yards. He rushed for over 100 yards in nine games during his career, including a 176-yard performance against Furman in 1967.
