Amanda Duffy Invited to Carolina Courage Training Camp
February 04, 2003 | Soccer
Although not selected in the 32-player draft this past Sunday, Duffy got the call from Courage assistant coach Sue Ellis on Monday, inviting her to the team's tryouts from February 23-27.
"We knew Duffy was selected as one of the 80 players being considered in the draft, said ECU head coach Rob Donnenwirth. "With only 32 players being selected, we felt she would still have a good shot at landing with a team."
A first-team All-Conference USA and NSCAA All-South Region second-team performer her last two seasons, Duffy holds the ECU career records for goals (33) and points (83). She also holds the ECU season record for goals with 14.
"This is a tremendous accomplishment for Amanda and I don't know anyone that is more deserving," said Donnenwirth. "She is an extremely driven person and this has been a dream of hers since the inception of WUSA. She knows she still has a lot to prove at training camp, but I know she is prepared and hungry to show she is a professional caliber player."
"This is a great opportunity and I'm hoping to make the best of it," said Duffy.
The WUSA is an eight-team professional league and is entering its third season of play. The league is considered the best women's soccer professional leagues in the world. It has attracted top US players such as Mia Hamm and Brandi Chastain as well as top international players from around the globe. The Carolina Courage is the WUSA defending champion and plays its games just outside of Raleigh in Cary, N.C.
