
ECU's Duffy Helps Hampton Roads to W-League Championship

GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Former East Carolina women's soccer standout and current assistant coach Amanda Duffy helped lead the Hampton Roads Piranhas to a 1-0 overtime victory over the Chicago Cobras to win their first ever W-League National Championship. Duffy played every minute in the Piranhas victory, which was televised live on Foxsports World Aug. 10.
The W-League was the top level of women's soccer until 2001, when the success of the United States in the Women's World Cup gave rise to the Women's United Soccer Association. The W-League is the top level of amateur soccer in America and consists of 26 teams in five divisions across the United States and Canada.
While at ECU Duffy, a former team captain, marked her name all over the ECU record books. She is ranked first in career goals (33) and points (83) and second in assists (17). During her four-year playing career, she led the team for two seasons in shots, points, and goals.
In 2001, she led Conference USA in shots (63), points (32), and goals (14). In 2002, she was ranked in nine different categories in C-USA including fourth in shots (67), fifth in points (28) and fourth in goals (11).
Duffy was named C-USA Player of the Week once in 2002 and was named first team All-Conference USA in 2001 and 2002. She was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-South Region second team in 2001 and 2002. Duffy was also named to Soccer Buzz to the southeast region third team in 2001 and 2002.
The Pirates open the season against Texas on Aug. 29 in Raleigh, N.C., at SAS Stadium, home of the WUSA's Carolina Courage.
