GREENVILLE, N.C. - Chris Rose, the son of Hall of Fame Penn State volleyball coach Russ Rose and three-time All-American Lori Rose, has been named assistant volleyball coach at East Carolina, according to an announcement by head coach Julie Torbett on Monday.
"I would like to thank Julie and the East Carolina administration for giving me this opportunity," Rose said. "I look forward to doing everything I can to make this program the best it can be both on and off the court."
Rose comes to ECU after working as a volunteer assistant coach at the University at Buffalo where he assisted with event management, provided assistance during practices, scouted opposition and operated the Data Volley program.
Prior to his stint at Buffalo, Rose served as the head student manager for the Penn State women's volleyball team from 2012-14. During that time, he gained experience working in a championship environment as the Nittany Lions won the 2013 and 2014 National Championships.
"I am excited and proud to hire Chris Rose as my assistant coach," Head coach Julie Torbett said. "He has grown up in a championship culture and shares the vision we have at East Carolina. Chris is ambitious and will work tirelessly to assist in moving the program forward. He will provide congruency within the coaching staff in our training style and recruiting objectives. It is a unique situation to hire the son of a legendary coach. We are anxious to get him in the gym and out on the road recruiting."
As a student at Penn State, Rose saw action as a practice player for the women's squad. He was utilized as a scout player in preparation for matches as well as assisting in the improvement of the team. Additionally, he also worked with Coach Rose in the development of the scout team.
For four summers, Rose coached 14 junior high and high school campers in all areas of skill development and team play. During this time, he instructed high school teams and coaches in team formation as well as match play while also setting up courts for camp and officiating camp tournaments.
Rose was a four-year letterwinner at State College (Pa.) High School where he helped lead the team to a state championship during his senior season.
He earned his Bachelor of Science from Penn State in recreation, park and tourism management in 2014.
