
Gold Takes Game One Of Fall Classic 10-8

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Spencer Brickhouse drove in three runs, while Dusty Baker collected a RBI helping Gold to a 10-8 win over Purple Friday night at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium in Game 1 of the 2016 Purple-Gold World Series.
Trailing 5-1 after three frames, Gold (1-0) scored nine runs over the final five innings behind a 13-hit attack on the night. Purple (0-1) tallied 10 hits getting multiple base knocks from Luke Bolka, Bryce Harman, Andrew Henrickson and Charlie Yorgen.
Brickhouse and Turner Brown paced the Gold squad with three hits each, while TJ Riles and Jake Washer each added a pair.
Landon Letchworth (1-0) picked up the win for Gold in relief allowing one run (earned) on two hits with a pair of strikeouts over three innings. Evan Kruczynski was touched for five runs (all earned) on six hits over four frames and seven strikeouts. Evan Voliva worked one inning of relief surrendering two runs (both earned) on two hits with one punch out.
Cam Colmore (0-1) suffered the loss after giving up five runs (four earned) on seven hits with a strikeout in two innings. Jacob Wolfe allowed four runs (all earned) on six hits in 4.2 frames, while Bolka gave up a run (earned) in one-third of an inning.
Washer, who was one of four Purple members with multiple hits, led off the second inning with a solo blast to left field tying the game at one-all. Yorgen staked the Gold to a 1-0 lead in the first frame with a shot down the right field line.
Purple posted a four-run third taking a 5-1 lead behind a Gold error, an RBI double by Harman and RBI single by Bolka.
Riles pulled Gold within three, 5-2, when he scored on a Wolfe wild pitch in the fourth.
Both teams plated two runs each in the fifth making it a 7-3 game. But Gold responded with two runs in the sixth and four in the seventh taking a 10-7 lead. Purple added a late run in the top of the eighth capping the scoring at 10-8.
Game Two of the three-game series will be played Saturday, Nov. 5 with a 1 p.m. (ET) scheduled first pitch. Following the contest, the Pirates will hold its annual Fall "Meet the Pirates".
