Boyd On Outland Trophy Watch List For Second-Straight Year
July 08, 2016 | Football
DALLAS, Texas - East Carolina senior offensive lineman J.T. Boyd has been named to the 2016 Outland Trophy Watch List, according to an announcement by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) Friday.
A two-year All-American Athletic Conference performer, Boyd joins former ECU standout Brian Rimpf (2002-03) as recent Pirates to earn multiple selections as an Outland Trophy Watch List candidate. The award annually recognizes the nation's top interior lineman.
In 2015, Boyd helped anchor an offensive line that reached 400 or more total yards on six occasions, which included five passing outings of 300-plus yards. The Pirates stood among the top 35 units at the FBS level in fourth-down conversions (64.7 percent/18th), redzone efficiency (88.6 percent/23rd), passing offense (281.3 ypg/27th) and third-down conversions (43.0 percent/35th).
Boyd has played in 33 career contests, owning a combined 23 starts at the guard and center positions. He has been an integral part of an ECU offense that has produced 25 400-yard outings - 17 of 500 yards or more - dating back to the 2013 season opener.
He is the second Pirate named to a preseason watch list so far this summer, following punter Worth Gregory (Ray Guy Award/July 7), and one of four AAC players on the Outland Trophy Watch List.
The Outland Trophy winner is chosen from three finalists who are a part of the annual FWAA All-America Team. The FWAA All-America Committee, after voting input from the entire membership, selects a 26-man first team and eventually the three Outland finalists. Committee members, then by individual ballot, select the winner. Only interior linemen on offense or defense are eligible for the award; ends are not eligible.
The list will be trimmed to six or seven semifinalists on Nov. 17. Five days later, three Outland Trophy finalists will be named by the FWAA. The winner of the 71st Outland Trophy -- named after the late John Outland, an All-America lineman at Penn at the turn of the 20th century -- will be announced on live on ESPN on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Dec. 8. For the second straight year, the show will air from the National Football Foundation's College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.
The Outland Trophy presentation banquet, sponsored by the Greater Omaha Sports Committee, will be held on Jan. 11, 2017 in Omaha, Neb.
