Avion Jones Set To Compete At NACAC U23 Championships
July 14, 2016 | Track & Field
GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina All-America high jumper Avion Jones has earned a spot on Team USA for the 2016 North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) U-23 Championships, scheduled for July 15-17 in San Salvador, El Salvador. The high jump event will take place on the final day of competition.
Â
The NACAC U-23 Championships are held every two years in one of the 32 member nations of the North America, Central America and Caribbean Athletic Association - one of six regional athletics associations affiliated with the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).
Â
Jones was chosen by USA Track & Field based on the United States performance rank order list for all age-eligible athletes (20, 21 or 22). The 2016 NACAC U-23 team consists of two athletes per individual event, plus additional members selected for relay pools.
Â
To earn a spot the NACAC Under-23 Team, an athlete must have achieved the applicable NACAC qualifying standard in a sanctioned or recognized USA Track and Field, IAAF, college or high school (but not dual or triangular) competition. Jones' personal-best mark of 2.31 meters (7'7") was easily enough to qualify for selection to the squad.
Â
After winning his fourth-consecutive American Athletic Conference high jump title back in May in Orlando, as well as taking fourth place at the most recent NCAA Outdoor Championships, Jones advanced to the finals of the 2016 United States Olympic Trials and finished among the top 14 athletes in the nation.
