July 15, 2016 | Football
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - East Carolina wide receiver and return specialist Quay Johnson is one of 43 players named to the 2016 Paul Hornung Award Preseason Watch List, according to an announcement by the Louisville Sports Commission (LSC) Friday.
Â
Johnson is the fourth Pirate since the award's inception in 2010 to earn inclusion on the watch list following Dwayne Harris (2010), Justin Hardy (2014) and Zay Jones (2015).
Â
In addition to catching 16 passes for 134 yards and a touchdown in 12 games on the offensive unit, Johnson served as ECU's top kickoff and punt returner during the 2015 campaign. He ranked third in the American Athletic Conference with a 9.1 punt return average, picking up 191 yards in 19 attempts, while standing 11th in the league with a 20.1 kickoff return clip (27-544). He tallied 50 or more kickoff return yards on six occasions, which included a personal-best 84-yard effort at BYU.
Â
Johnson racked up 853 all-purpose yards as a sophomore, compiling a combined 358 in consecutive contests against Virginia Tech (105), SMU (career-high 144) and BYU (109) from Sept. 26 to Oct. 10. He will open the 2016 season needing only 34 yards to reach 1,000 for his career.
Â
A 2016 Preseason All-AAC pick as a return specialist by both Athlon Sports and Phil Steele Magazine, Johnson also owns 25 career receptions for 191 yards in 22 games.
Â
The Paul Hornung Award presented by Texas Roadhouse, now in its seventh season, is presented annually to the most versatile player in major college football by the Louisville Sports Commission. The LSC created the PHA to recognize the distinctive talents of student-athletes and help preserve the legacy of Paul Hornung – a man many consider the most versatile player in the history of college and professional football. Each year, the winner and his family are honored in late-February at a banquet presented by KentuckyOne Health at the Galt House Hotel in downtown Louisville, Ky.
Â
The 2016 Watch List was compiled by a panel of college football experts based on a combination of 2015 statistics, career performance, sports information director recommendations and expectations heading into the 2016 season. Players may be added to the watch list during the regular season based on performance.
Â
Earlier this week, The Paul Hornung Award presented by Texas Roadhouse was granted associate membership in the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA). The NCFAA was founded in 1997 as a coalition of major U.S. collegiate football awards.
