July 22, 2016 | Women's Tennis
GREENVILLE, N.C. - The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced its 2016 academic awards, with East Carolina women's tennis earning a spot on this year's ITA All-Academic Teams list.
In addition to the team honor, five Pirates received recognition for individual academic accomplishments, including recent graduate Nicole LaDuca, rising senior Betsy Zurawel, as well as rising juniors Sarah Sarjoo, Maria Gomez and Meredith Smith.
LaDuca concludes her career with four-straight ITA individual accolades, while Sarjoo picked up her second in as many years.
The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA member program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale).
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must be a varsity letter winner, have a grade point average of at least 3.5 for the current academic year, and have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters.
East Carolina was joined by each of the other 10 schools in the American Athletic Conference in earning the team award. More than 4,200 scholar-athletes were recognized across all NCAA divisions, along with over 700 all-academic teams.
East Carolina closed its 2016 season with a 17-9 overall record, as the win total was the program's most since recording 18 in 2011.
