ECU Eyes First Scrimmage After Second Two-A-Day Workout
August 11, 2016 | Football
GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina inched closer to its first intra-squad scrimmage following its second two-a-day workout of fall camp Thursday at Hight Field inside the Cliff Moore Practice Complex. The Pirates spent just over two hours wearing full pads in the morning session and followed with a brief team-themed 45-minute walk-through in the afternoon.
"We had two really good practices with a lot of good work," Montgomery said. "It was a physical and hot workout early, but I was pleased with the execution. Later on we had an up tempo and what I like to call a 'jog-through' alignment and assignment practice, which was very detailed and we were able to get a lot of good and meaningful reps in."
Thursday opened with a 12-minute flex period before the Pirates moved into special teams and individual group work. The offensive skill positions spent 18 minutes on routes vs. air, run game footwork along with technique and assignment drills. Getting off the block, pass drops, power scoop and line/angle tackle drills were points of emphasis for the defense leading into the first 12-minute team session (first-and-10).
Another 21 minutes of group work, a 10-minute 1-on-1 stanza (receivers and defensive backs), eight minutes of skeleton (third downs) and a five-minute No-Quarter drill led into a 10-minute team pass phase. On the defensive side of the ball, drills consisted of 3-step technique, pass rush, formation adjustments and stunts. The offensive line focused on pass/run lane assignments, sets vs. air, center/guard set and pressure, pass rush and run blocking.
Following lunch, special teams and individual meetings where the Pirates reviewed film, they returned to the field for their second workout. The afternoon practice focused team situations such as first-and-10, third-and-8, redzone (first-and-10) and goal line (third-and-4) before Montgomery closed out the day with an entertaining and humorous punt catch challenge featuring the offensive and defensive lines.
Saturday's closed scrimmage, which will take place at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium, is designed to start formulating the program's first depth chart of the season. Following the controlled contest, ECU will host the 22nd Annual Meet the Pirates event from 6-8 p.m.
Single-game, three-game mini packs and season tickets for all ECU home games are still available to the Pirate Nation and can be purchased by calling the ECU Athletic Ticket Office at 252-737-4500, through the Online Ticket Center, or by visiting the ECU Athletics Ticket Office.
