More Than 200 ECU Student-Athletes Named All-Academic

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - More than 200 East Carolina University student-athletes earned recognition on the American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team during the 2015-16 academic year, Commissioner Mike Aresco announced Thursday. A record 2,361 student-athletes from The American institutions were recognized with the distinction this year with the Pirates producing 221 student-athletes on the list, third-most of any school in the league.
To be eligible for the honor, a nominee must have competed in an American Athletic Conference-sponsored sport, attained a minimum grade-point average of 3.00 for the preceding academic year, and completed a minimum of two consecutive semesters or three consecutive quarters of academic work, with a total of 18 semester or 27 quarter credits, not including remedial courses.
The ECU women's golf and women's tennis team each had 100 percent of its letterwinners on the list with additional six squads having at least 70 percent of their student-athletes represented. Soccer placed 89.7 percent of its roster on the team and the women's swimming and diving team had 85.1 percent of its roster on the list. Almost 80 percent (.789) of the softball roster was represented on the list as well. Baseball produced the highest percentage of all-academic team members among the Pirates' men's teams with 78.1 percent, followed by men's golf (.727) and men's tennis (.714).
The Pirate football team had 30 student-athletes named to the All-Academic Team, while the soccer team led ECU's women's teams with 26 student-athletes generating a 3.0-plus GPA. Following the football and soccer teams are: baseball (25), women's cross country/track and field (23), women's swimming and diving (23), men's swimming and diving (17), softball (15), men's cross country/track and field (13), volleyball (11), women's tennis (10), men's golf (8), women's golf (6), men's tennis (5), women's basketball (5) and men's basketball (4).
Cincinnati placed the highest number of student-athletes on the team, producing 273 members. UConn followed closely with 256 followed by East Carolina, Temple (217) and USF (214).
