August 18, 2016 | Softball
GREENVILLE, N.C. – Meredith Burroughs, who spent her first two seasons of collegiate eligibility as a standout infielder at NC State, has completed a grant in aid agreement to attend East Carolina and play softball for the Pirates according to an announcement by head coach Courtney Oliver Thursday.
"Meredith is a very talented player," Oliver said. "She has gained a lot of experience playing at a high level at NC State and has been quite successful. She is a proven run producer who will fit perfectly in the middle of our order."
Burroughs was a key part of the Wolfpack lineup in 2016 as she was one of just four players on the squad to start all 56 games. She experienced action primarily at first base, but also made a start in right field and pitched 13.1 innings with two starts in the circle. Displaying some pop at the dish, Burroughs clubbed 13 home runs – a mark that was second on the squad and tied for seventh in the ACC – and compiled .584 slugging percentage and .418 on base mark (1.002 OPS). She finished the season with a .279 batting average to go along with 43 hits, 31 runs scored and 40 RBI.
In addition to her offensive prowess, Burroughs showed a knack for working the count in her favor as she drew 35 walks – the fifth most in the league. She also tallied 11 multi-hit games and 10 multi-RBI games and had a 12-game streak of reaching base safely.
As a freshman, Burroughs started all 57 games on a NC State squad that won the NCAA Harrisonburg Regional and was just two games away from reaching the Women's College World Series. She notched 34 hits, six doubles, a triple, nine home runs, 25 runs scored and 33 RBI. Burroughs also produced a slugging percentage of .439 and an on-base percentage of .337 as well as hitting her first collegiate grand slam against Florida State to lift the Wolfpack to a 9-4 win over the Seminoles.
Burroughs played her high school softball at C.B. Aycock and earned MaxPreps All-America honors as a sophomore and senior. She garnered all-state, all-area and all-conference accolades all four years in high school and was tabbed the MaxPreps Player of the Year following her sophomore season. Burroughs led her team to the state championship series as a senior and finished the year with a .541 batting average while recording an average higher than .500 three times as a sophomore (.545), junior (.526) and senior (.541). She also holds the North Carolina prep state record for most home runs in a single season (19).
