
ECU Picked Fifth In The American East Division Poll

NEWPORT, R.I. – Coming off its second season in the American Athletic Conference, East Carolina has been tabbed to finish fifth in the East Division of the AAC as voted on by members of the media.
The Pirates picked up a total of 55 points finishing ahead of UCF (48). USF, who received 15 first-place votes (164 points), was picked to win the East Division crown and picked up two votes as the favorite for the conference title. Temple received nine first-place votes in the East Division and garnered one vote as the league favorite. Cincinnati had six first-place votes in the East Division balloting.
Houston ran away with the voting in the West Division poll receiving all 30 first-place votes and is the overwhelming choice to win the American Championship in the preseason media poll. The Cougars received 27 of a possible 30 votes to win the league title in the preseason balloting.
The second American Athletic Conference Football Championship will be played Saturday, Dec. 3, at the home site of the division champion with the best conference record.
Under the direction of first-year head coach Scottie Montgomery, ECU returns 11 of 22 positional starters with five on offense and six on defense. The Pirates also return 50 lettermen from last year's squad (19/offense, 26/defense, 5/specialist). A year ago, ECU turned in a 5-7 overall record and a 3-5 mark in The American.
Of the 11 returnees, five have been named to a preseason watch list in 2016: J.T. Boyd (Outland Trophy), Worth Gregory (Ray Guy Award), Quay Johnson (Paul Hornung Award), Zay Jones (Biletnikoff Award) and Christian Matau (Polynesian Football Player of the Year).
The Pirates will open the 2016 season at home against Western Carolina inside Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 3 with a 6 p.m. (ET) scheduled kickoff and will be televised on ESPN 3.
