Pirates Inch Closer To First Two-A-Day Practice
August 07, 2016 | Football
GREENVILLE, N.C. – Under the lights at the Cliff Moore Practice Complex, East Carolina concluded its fourth workout of the preseason as first-year head coach Scottie Montgomery guided his squad through a near two-hour practice in shells Sunday evening.
Monday, the Pirates will don helmets and shorts as they prepare for the first of three scheduled two-a-day workouts Tuesday.
"I liked the way our offense came out tonight in our team run portion and they did a great job," Montgomery said. "That's what we like to see from our offensive line. We came out and popped the defense well and had some four-yard gains, which tells me that we are getting better running the football. In the second part of practice we worked on third down situations and you started to see the defense get up and play really well. We had some great secondary plays and an interception by Yiannis (Bowden) on a screenplay. In all it was a good day. Now we have to backup tonight's practice with another good one tomorrow both physically and schematically."
Prior to Sunday night's practice, the Pirate coaching staff and players took a team photo inside Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium before moving to a green-screen taping session and a marketing photo shoot. After treatments, they prepped for the evening session with individual and special team meetings before hitting the field.
For the first time this fall, all 105 members of camp worked out together starting with a 10-minute walk-through, followed by a special teams warm-up and flex period.
After a 70-minute lightning delay, the Pirates resumed practice with group sessions where the offensive line ran through chutes, hit the sleds, performed run and pass blocking drills and continued their footwork technique. The skill positions focused on quarterback drops, releases, routes, run game footwork and ball security. On the defensive side of the ball, slant reps, run reads, pass rush, sled and blitz work were points of emphasis.
During the first team segment, the Pirates had 12 minutes of team vs. the run, followed by three more individual periods, a six-minute 1-on-1 (receivers vs. defensive backs) and 10 minutes of 7-of-7 skeleton work. ECU closed out night with 12 minutes of team focusing on third down execution.
After a team dinner in Harvey Hall, ECU returned to the meeting rooms before retiring to Tyler Hall for the evening.
Single-game, three-game mini packs and season tickets for all ECU home games are still available to the Pirate Nation and can be purchased by calling the ECU Athletic Ticket Office at 252-737-4500, through the Online Ticket Center, or by visiting the ECU Athletics Ticket Office.
