Lindberg's Goal Lifts East Carolina Over UNC Greensboro, 1-0
September 18, 2016 | Soccer
GREENVILLE, N.C. - Junior midfielder Annah Lindberg scored her first goal of the season in the 54th minute while redshirt freshman goalkeeper Caroline Jeffers made four saves for her second shutout, as the East Carolina women's soccer team held on for a 1-0 home victory over UNC Greensboro on Sunday afternoon at Johnson Stadium.
The Pirates outshot the Spartans, 17-10, overall and 6-4 in shots on goal, while the two sides has five corner kicks apiece.
Lindberg took a season-high five shot attempts, while senior striker Lana Spitler also had five shots, including two on goal. Caylin Prillaman led UNCG (3-6-1) with three shot attempts and goalkeeper Chloe Buehler made five saves.
THE GOAL
54th Minute: ECU was fouled approximately 35 yards out and 10 yards inside the sideline, directly in front of its bench, where Lindberg stepped up for her team's first set-piece opportunity of the second half. The Manassas, Va., native lofted a cross to the far post, in search of a header by a teammate, but the ball bounced before striking the inside of the far post and rolling across the goal line for what would prove to be the game-wnning goal.
HEAD COACH ROB DONNENWIRTH QUOTE
"I thought early on, we looked like the better team. We missed three really good chances. You sort of expect to get another easy chance, but sometimes, they just don't come. Sometimes the other team wakes up, adjusts a bit and I think they did against us. Defensively, I thought we defended corners and free kicks better. We spent a lot of time on that this week and I don't think they had a lot of chances in those situations. Overall, I thought we could have been a little better, but we'll take the 1-0 win."
PIRATE NOTES
-Lindberg's goal may have been her first at ECU, but it was the third of her collegiate career after scoring twice at NC State in 2014.
-ECU has now defeated UNCG in three-straight matchups.
-The Pirates have now scored first in six of their nine matches in 2016.
UP NEXT
East Carolina (4-5) will play its final non-conference match of the season on Thursday, Oct. 22 when it makes the short trip south to Wilmington to take on UNCW. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
