September 04, 2016 | Soccer
NORFOLK, Va. - The East Carolina women's soccer team dropped its second-straight match in a 5-1 road defeat at Old Dominion in non-conference action Sunday evening.
The Pirates were outshot, 15-10, overall and 11-5 in shots on goal while being edged, 4-3, in corner kick chances in the contest.
THE GOALS
20th Minute: The Monarchs escaped an early threat and were able to push back into high pressure on ECU's back line, coming up with a turnover by the defense as Natalie Johnson touched the loose ball to Madison Hogan, who got around goalkeeper Caroline Jeffers and finished a shot into the open net for the first goal of the match.
28th Minute: Old Dominion (2-4) kept its pressure on the Pirates, weaving its way into the heart of the defense with crisp passing, when Grace Haverly ripped a shot that was stopped by Jeffers. Striker Iris Achterhof gathered the rebound from close and struck an uncontested shot into the net to make it 2-0 in favor of the home team.
29th Minute: The Monarchs followed up just 37 seconds after its second goal when they forced a turnover shortly following ECU's ensuing kickoff and marched back down the field, where Haverly scored for the second time on the night to extend Old Dominion's lead to 3-0.
35th Minute: East Carolina (2-4) would not go quietly before the end of the first half, as the purple and gold put together a series of offensive attacks. Senior defender Autumn Berry was able to touch a pass ahead to sophomore striker Courtney Cash, who set herself up to hit a shot out of the reach of the opposing goalkeeper for her third goal of the season.
64th Minute: Despite some pressure by the Pirates, Old Dominion was able to get back on the attack in the first 20 minutes of the second half, as Jeffers had her pass taken away by Kyra Ricks, who took advantage of the ECU goalkeeper being out of position and finished a shot into an open net to push the score to 4-1.
79th Minute: Following a pair of substitutions inside 70-minute mark, the Monarchs tacked on their fifth goal of the night when Alex Davidson got an open look and struck a shot from close range past an outstretched Jeffers.
