Cross Country Set To Host ECU Pirate Invitational At Lake Kristi

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The ECU cross country program is set to host 11 teams for the 2017 ECU Pirate Invitational scheduled for Friday, Oct. 13 at Overton's Lake Kristi.

The women's 6K race will start at 5:30 p.m. with the men's 8K beginning at 6:05.

NC State, Duke, UNCG, UNC Asheville, USC Upstate, The Citadel, College of Charleston, Winthrop, Norfolk State, Saint Augustine and Elizabeth City State will join ECU in the event field.

In their most recent competition, the Pirates traveled to Lehigh University for the Paul Short Run. Senior Bakri Abushouk tied the program record in the 8K. Abushouk's time of 23:53 matched Kyle MacKenzie's time ran in 2003 at the N.C. Intercollegiate Division I Men's Cross Country Championships at Overton's Lake Kristi. Abushouk placed 14th overall and was the top runner for ECU for the third meet in a row. Junior Nick Ciaccia put up a personal-best 8K time of 25:02 and finished 131st.

On the women's side, junior Grace Sullivan ran the second-fastest 6K time in program history, crossing the finish line in 20:37 to set a new personal best. Sophomore Mikayla Stoudt clocked the seventh-fastest time in the school annals as well, running a career-best 21:22 to place 113th.

In last year's Pirate Invitational, the women captured the team title over Norfolk State and Wake Tech. Sullivan won the individual crown, finishing the 5K in 18:15.06.

Following this weekend's home meet, ECU will prepare for the American Athletic Conference Championships scheduled for Oct. 28 in Philadelphia, Pa.
