October 17, 2017 | General
GREENVILLE, N.C. --- In collaboration with ECU Career Services, the Department of Athletics hosted its first Student-Athlete Career Networking Event earlier this month to assist student-athletes with career opportunities beyond graduation as part of the Professional Pirates program.
Â
Approximately 100 student-athletes spent the evening inside the Murphy Center engaging with 20 organizations to find meaningful career opportunities upon receipt of the degree. The event resulted in multiple interviews for both full-time and internship positions.
Â
"Watching these student-athletes step out of their comfort zone, introducing themselves to recruiters, and gaining confidence as they prepare for life after graduation gave me warm fuzzies and put a huge smile on my face," Career Services staff member Sarah Lage said. "I am extremely proud of all our student-athletes."
Â
The ECU Department of Athletics has joined with Career Services to ensure that all student-athletes are receiving career development instructions while they pursue their degrees. The goal of the partnership is to plan, develop, and implement career development programs, workshops, and presentations to enhance student-athlete's career advancement.Â
Â
"I think it's beneficial for every student-athlete because it's a never a bad idea to broaden your network," Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Vice President Karlie Smith said. "Whether it's making connections, practicing interviews or meeting your future employers, it's great experience before entering the real world."
Â
Since 2014, ECU Career Services and the Department of Athletics has collaborated on the Professional Pirates program, which prepares student-athletes for life after athletics/graduation, including their careers or graduate/professional school.Â
Â
"We want our student-athletes to be successful in competition, but we also want them to be prepared to be successful once they leave," ECU Director of Life Skills Danielle Morrin said. Â "Our relationship with Career Services is helping achieve this goal."
