Hofbauer and Ruiz Earn Two Wins in California
October 03, 2017 | Women's Tennis
GREENVILLE, N.C. – Lisa Hofbauer and Celia Ruiz earned a pair of doubles wins at the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif., this past weekend. Additionally, Ruiz competed in the PQ Singles bracket.
"While we are not satisfied with this tournament we do want to congratulate Celia and Lisa for their play this past weekend in California," head coach Tom Morris said. "We beat Rice in doubles and Texas in singles so it was a solid tournament for us. One of the things we focus on in our program is improvement and certainly this weekend was an improvement on how we did there last year."
The duo was the first doubles team in ECU history to qualify for the event. In the opening round, Hofbauer and Ruiz were paired against Rice's Lindsey Hodge and Michaela Haet where the Pirates earned an 8-4 win. They advanced to face Nicole Anderson and Colomba DiFillippo of San Diego earning another 8-4 win in the second round. Hofbauer and Ruiz lost in the third round, 8-4, to Emma Davis and Eliza Omirou from Wake Forest. Had the Pirates duo beaten Davis and Omirou they would have advanced into the Q Bracket.Â
In singles, Celia Ruiz lost a grueling three-set match, 6-4, 2-6, 3-6, to Sofia Bianco from Oklahoma State. Ruiz then bounced back to defeat Marta Perez-Mur from Texas, 7-6 (4), 6-4.
