November 16, 2017 | Women's Tennis
GREENVILLE, N.C. – Junior Celia Ruiz has continued to raise the bar for the ECU women's tennis program. After becoming the first player in program history to earn a national ranking in March, Ruiz has continued to climb the rankings checking in at No. 52 in the most recent poll on Nov. 15.
"One of the things that we stress in our program is the idea of improving," head coach Tom Morris said. "Through hard work and discipline we can, control improvement."
Ruiz had a busy and competitive fall facing some of the nation's top competition after earning invitations to the ITA Masters, Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships and the ITA National Fall Championships. She became the first player in ECU history to be ranked in the preseason poll and first to be seeded in the ITA Carolina Regional, both in singles and doubles with partner Lisa Hofbauer.
"In her time here, we have seen Celia improve from playing No. 2 on our team, to becoming our program's first nationally-ranked player last year at No. 124. Her ranking is a result of very hard work and we congratulate Celia on this recognition. We look forward to her continued hard work and improvement throughout this season and next year."
Ruiz is currently the highest-ranked singles player in the American Athletic Conference and is joined by No. 82 Tsveta Dimitrova (Houston), No. 97 Ana Roman Dominguez (USF) and No. 122 Martina Okalova (Tulsa).
