ECU Sets 2018 Baseball Banquet For February 10
December 12, 2017 | Baseball
GREENVILLE, N.C. – ECU baseball fans will get a chance to meet the 2018 Pirates up close and personal on Saturday, Feb. 10 as ECU will host its 2018 Pirate Baseball Banquet inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.
Greenville Mayor and ECU alum P.J. Connelly (2004-05) as well as former Pirate hurler Cory Scott (1999-2000) will serve as keynote speakers, while WNCT-TV Sports Director Brian Bailey will emcee the event. Connelly helped the Pirates to an 88-39 two-year record along with a pair of NCAA Regional berths and a 2004 Columbia Super Regional appearance. The lefty posted an 8-1 career record and combined on three shutouts while allowing 53 runs (47 earned) in 31 career games (4.33 ERA). His 2004 club set the school record for wins in a season (51) and consecutive wins (19), while establishing a Conference USA record for wins (25) and consecutive victories (22) on the way to the regular season title. The Pirates claimed the Kinston Regional crown with a perfect 3-0 ledger before falling to South Carolina in the Super Regional round and finished ranked in the Top 15 in four national polls.
Scott anchored a team that posted a 92-34 two-year record, won a pair of Colonial Athletic Association Tournament titles and earned two No. 1 NCAA Regional seeds (Baton Rouge/1999, Lafayette/2000) under ECU Hall of Famer Keith LeClair. The right-hander recorded one of the best seasons in program history in 2000, leading the nation with 22 saves – one shy of tying the NCAA record while establishing new ECU and CAA single-season standards. Scott posted a 5-0 record in 32 appearances, struck out 50 batters to just 13 walks in 41.1 innings (1.52 ERA) and held opposing hitters to a .190 composite batting average. He became the Pirates' first consensus All-America selection in 2000 garnering first-team accolades by four major collegiate baseball organizations. During his two-year career, Scott boasted a perfect 7-0 ledger with a then school-record 23 saves and allowed just 20 runs (16 earned) in 73.1 innings sporting a 1.96 ERA.
"This is always an exciting night for Pirate baseball fans," ECU Head Coach Cliff Godwin said. "Our players and coaches love interacting with our fans to get them fired up for the upcoming season. There is no better way to get the season started than with two former Pirate baseball greats P.J. Connelly, our mayor, and 2000 All-American Cory Scott leading the charge!"
The 2018 Pirates will be introduced during the program and fans will have a chance to hear from Coach Godwin as well as selected players in a question and answer format.
During his three years at the helm of the program, Godwin has guided ECU to a pair of NCAA Regional berths, a Super Regional appearance, an American Athletic Conference Tournament title and a 110-72-1 (.604) overÂall record. Five players have earned All-America honors, six were named to all-regional teams (five in Charlottesville), eight took home all-conference honors (all first-teamers), nine were selected as AAC Player-of-the-Week, while four were drafted by Major League Baseball teams.
Off the field, his teams have excelled in the classroom by registering a 3.0 GPA or higher in five of six semesters, including a program-best 3.42 in the fall of 2015. Fifty-four (54) student-athletes have been named to the ECU Director of Athletics Honor Roll, while over 30 Pirates have earned incluÂsion on The American All-Academic Team maintaining a minimum 3.00 GPA. For the second-straight year, ECU took home The American Team Academic Excellence Award after sporting a 3.27 cumulative GPA for the 2016-17 year. In 2016, Godwin's club received the American Baseball Coaches AsÂsociation (ABCA) after registering a collective 3.31 GPA.
In the community, the Pirates have volunteered over 3,000 hours working with programs in the Pitt County area as the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina, Team IMPACT, Riley's Army, Cypress Glenn ReÂtirement Community Flood Relief, Red Cross, First Born Community DevelÂopment Center and the James, ACES for Autism, Make-A-Wish Foundation and the James and Connie Maynard Children's Hospital.
Pirate fans, coaches, players and ECU dignitaries will enjoy a sit-down dinner once again provided by McCall's BBQ and Seafood. Capacity for this year's event is limited to 800 people with ticket prices set for adults ($40), ECU Baseball Alumni ($25) and children under 12 ($20). Fans also have the ability to purchase tables at the price of $1,000, which consists of eight seats for family and friends to go along with two players. Each table that is sold will receive a team autographed baseball jersey and two general admission season ticket vouchers for 2018. All tickets, tables and silent auction purchases will directly benefit ECU Baseball.
Every person in attendance will also get a team poster and one ticket voucher to the 2018 season opener against Western Carolina, which is set for 4 p.m. on Feb. 16 at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium.
