Stephenson Wins CNCC Amateur

PINEHURST, N.C. --- ECU sophomore Patrick Stephenson fired a closing round 3-under 69 to rally from three strokes back to win the storm shortened Country Club of North Carolina Amateur by a stroke.

Stephenson carded a 36-hole total of 4-under 140 (71-69). James Madison junior Walker Cress finished second with a 3-under 141 (68-73).

After weather cancelled the second round Stephenson opened the final stage with four birdies in the first six holes and stood 4-under for the tournament after the opening stretch. However with bogeys on the No. 8 and 11 holes, he fell back to 2-under. Stephenson collected himself and birdied the final two holes to hoist the trophy.

Other ECU finishes included freshman Stephen Carroll tying for eighth at 3-over 147, freshman Tim Bunten tied for 17^th at 5-over 149, sophomore Logan Shuping fired a 6-over 150 to tie for 25^th while freshman Jimbo Stanley carded an 11-over 155.

The Pirates will open their spring schedule Feb. 5 at the Sea Best Invitational at TPC Sawgrass.
