GREENVILLE, N.C. – ECU Head Women's Tennis Coach Tom Morris announced the addition of Minette Van Vreden Thursday afternoon. Van Vreden has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend ECU and play tennis for the Pirates in the fall of 2018.
Â
"We are extremely excited to announce the commitment of Minette Van Vreden," Morris said. "Minette is a great example of the type of student athlete that we strive to recruit. She has had a ITF junior world ranking in the top-200, which is higher than any other incoming freshman in our history. She has been ranked No. 1 in South Africa and has represented her country in many international events. Minette is also a strong student in the classroom and has maintained high grades throughout her high school career. We look forward to having Minette a part of our program beginning this August."
Â
Van Vreden, a native of Strand, Western Cape, South Africa, has been among the top-ranked women in the Tennis South Africa Rankings since her U12 year. From 2011-2017 she's maintained a top-5 ranking and held the No. 1 ranking (U18) from March 2016 through July 2017.
Â
In 2017, Van Vreden won the South African Nationals Championships (U18) and was the runner up in 2016. She also won back-to-back South African Masters National Titles in 2015 and 2016.
Â
At Bloemhof Girls High School in Stellenbosch she played No. 1 in the Top Schools Tournaments and helped her school to Best Tennis School in South Africa honors in 2016 and 2017. She was named the Junior Sportswoman of the Year award at BGHS in 2016 and 2017. Â
Â
On the international stage, she represented South Africa in the World Cup Finals in 2014 in the Czech Republic where the South African national team placed seventh. She's competed in the U20 African Championships where she won gold in 2016, the Commonwealth Youth Games in July 2017 reaching the semifinals out of 75 nations and the African Junior Championships in 2017.
