ECU Splits On Day Two Of Red And Black Showcase

GREENVILLE, N.C. – After taking two losses to begin the season Friday, the East Carolina softball team responded with a vengeance Saturday by routing Winthrop 14-6 in five innings on day two of the Red and Black Showcase at Turner Softball Stadium. The Pirates also fell to No. 10/12 Georgia 9-1 in five innings in their second contest of the day.

The Rundown: Game 1
Â
ECU exploded for 15 hits and three home runs against the Eagles' pitching staff in avenging Friday's 11-6 setback. The 14 runs scored are the high-water mark for the Courtney Oliver era, eclipsing the 11 East Carolina scored against Detroit in an 11-0 victory March 4, 2016 in Clearwater, Fla.

Senior outfielder Kacie Oshiro and redshirt freshman infielder Tate McClellan collected three hits apiece while McClellan also scored a run, hit her first collegiate home run and tallied five RBI – the most for a Pirate since Nicole Cheek produced six against Delaware State back on Feb. 6, 2015. Senior catcher Alex Mycek contributed four RBI of her own, Oshiro added four runs scored and junior infielder Karlie Smith piled up two hits and two runs scored for the potent East Carolina bats. Leah Young posted a hit, a run scored and three RBI to pace Winthrop.

Senior RHP Lydia Ritchie (1-1) picked up her first victory of the season, throwing 4.1 innings and allowing six runs on six hits with five walks and two strikeouts before giving way to freshman RHP Megan Mills who notched the final two outs of the game. Kiley Majette (0-2) was tagged with the loss for the Eagles as the Pirates touched her up for eight runs (four earned) on seven hits.

The Decisive Inning: With East Carolina clinging to a 4-3 lead in the top of the fourth inning, freshman infielder Logan Wood delivered a pinch hit single to lead off the frame. She would move over to second on a sac bunt by senior infielder Megan Quick before senior outfielder Ciara Ervin was hit by a pitch and Oshiro reached on an error in center field to load the bases.

Junior infielder Meredith Burroughs came through with a sacrifice fly to give the Purple and Gold some breathing room at 5-3 and Mycek connected on a 2-2 pitch, driving it over the wall in left center to clear the bases and put the game essentially out of reach with her team leading 8-3. A Smith double and McClellan home run capped the inning and left ECU with a 10-3 advantage.

Statistic of the Game: The Pirates came up clutch with two outs on the board throughout the game as they recorded 11 two-out RBI. All five of McClellan's RBI were with two gone.

The nationally-ranked Bulldogs broke a close game open with a five-run third inning on the way to the run-rule victory.

Oshiro and Burroughs had both of ECU's base knocks in the game while Ervin scored the Pirates' lone run off of Burroughs' RBI double in the third frame. Cortni Emmanuel went 3-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI for Georgia to complement a two-hit, three-RBI performance by Alysen Febrey.

Sophomore RHP Mary Williams (0-2) gave up seven runs on eight hits and walked three in getting saddled with the loss. Kylie Bass (2-0) earned the win in relief, tossing 2.2 perfect innings and notching a strikeout. Â

The Decisive Inning: After East Carolina sliced into the Bulldog's lead and made it a 2-1 ballgame in the top of the third, Georgia promptly received a leadoff single by Alyssa DiCarlo and a Lacey Summerlin walk to put runners at first and second. Following a double steal, Febrey lifted a 1-1 pitch high over the wall in right center to push the Bulldog cushion to 5-1. Kendall Burton added a RBI triple and Emmanuel tacked on a run-scoring groundout to make it 7-1 after three complete.

Statistic of the Game: Georgia out-hit ECU 14-2, tallying only three extra-base knocks but rapping out 11 singles.
