East Carolina Blanks Radford 5-0 Behind Ritchie’s One-Hitter
April 05, 2017 | Softball
GREENVILLE, N.C. – Backed by senior RHP Lydia Ritchie's third complete-game shutout of the season, East Carolina picked up a 5-0 non-conference victory over Radford Wednesday afternoon at the ECU Softball Stadium.
The teams attempted to play a doubleheader, but torrential downpour halted game two in the middle of the fifth inning to the point where play could not be resumed. The Highlanders were winning 6-0 at the time.
Team Records: East Carolina: (19-20) | Radford: (17-15)
The Rundown
Ritchie (11-7) was masterful in the circle, throwing 95 pitches and allowing just four batters to reach base all game. She allowed just one hit and struck out four batters to go along with two walks. Abby Morrow (13-8) surrendered four runs on six hits in the setback for her team while Lauren Maddrey tossed the finale three innings and gave up one run on three hits with three walks.
Redshirt freshman infielder Tate McClellan racked up three hits, a run scored and a RBI while junior infielder Meredith Burroughs rapped out two doubles and scored a run. Senior outfielder Kacie Oshiro also produced a two-hit performance and scored a run. Marissa Gagliano picked up the lone hit for the Highlanders.
How They Scored
Redshirt junior catcher Alex Mycek started the scoring in the bottom of the second when she crushed a towering home run over the left field fence to tie Burroughs for the team lead in long balls at 11. The Pirates kept it going in the bottom of the third inning, plating three runs on three hits to extend the advantage to 4-0. McClellan drove in Oshiro with a single to center before consecutive hit by pitches allowed Burroughs to cross home plate. Junior infielder Karlie Smith capped off the inning with a sacrifice fly that scored McClellan.
A RBI double by Burroughs in the bottom of the sixth inning plated Ervin, who led off the frame with a single through the right side, and provided the game's final margin.
Statistic of the Game
Mycek's home run increased ECU's team season total to 47, just 11 shy of matching the program record for long balls in a single campaign (58 in 2007).
