ECU Selected As A Finalist For Inaugural Community Service Award
June 13, 2017 | General
GREENVILLE, N.C. – The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and the Fiesta Bowl have selected East Carolina University as one of three finalists for the inaugural Community Service Award.
The award was designed to recognize NACDA member institutions in Division I by honoring exceptional athletics departments that make volunteerism and community service a way of life. A five-person committee consisting of athletics directors across the country and representatives from the Fiesta Bowl and NACDA will help choose this year's award winner.
The Community Service Award will be presented in the fall, at an on-campus event hosted by the winning institution. The winner will receive a trophy for permanent display and $10,000 for its chosen charity.
"We are excited about being a finalist for this prestigious national award," ECU Director of Athletics Jeff Compher said. "Service is a core value not only for our athletics department, but also for our entire University. While I am hopeful we win the overall award, I am extremely proud of our student-athletes for their extraordinary outreach in our community"
Florida Gulf Coast University and the University of Maryland were chosen as the other finalists.
ECU student-athletes worked with over 26 different nonprofit organizations during the 2016-17 academic year, impacting a variety of different populations that include underprivileged children, special needs populations and aging members of the community. By the end of April 2017, Pirate student-athletes completed 7,788 hours of community service.
"As President of SAAC (Student-Athlete Advisory Committee) it was an honor to lead such a dedicated group of student-athletes this past year," senior swimmer Jake Pierce said. "We realize how much the Greenville community supports us each and every day and feel privileged to be able to give back. We are truly honored and humbled to be recognized nationally for our efforts."
NACDA, now in its 52nd year, is the professional and educational association for more than 15,700 college athletics administrators at more than 1,700 institutions throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico, and manages 17 professional associations and three foundations.
The Fiesta Bowl believes in the importance of community outreach and service. Through charitable giving, the organization strives to enhance Arizona nonprofit organizations that contribute to the success of communities through youth, sports and education.
