East Carolina Announces Home-Heavy 2017 Volleyball Slate

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina volleyball team will play 18 matches inside Minges Coliseum as part of its 2017 schedule, released by school officials in its entirety Friday.

"I am pleased with our schedule, head coach Julie Torbett said. "We host two non-conference tournaments and have a total of 18 home matches this season. That is up from only 10 home matches last year. We are happy to get return visits from Georgia State and North Carolina A&T as well as welcome a Big 10 opponent in Rutgers to Greenville."

The Pirates will kick off the slate Aug. 25-27 hosting William and Mary, Georgia State and Rutgers for the East Carolina Invitational. ECU has not hosted a non-conference tournament since 2014. The next weekend, East Carolina will travel to the state of Florida for the Stetson Invitational. There, the Pirates will face off against Providence, Bucknell and the host Hatters.

ECU returns home Sept. 8-9 for the East Carolina Classic. Hampton, Gardner-Webb, The Citadel and Winthrop will make the trip to Greenville for the five-team event. After 10 days off from competition, the Pirates will host N.C. Central and North Carolina A&T for a non-conference doubleheader Sept. 19.

"We have eight new players on the roster," Torbett stated. "With such a young team it is very important to have matches where they can get some playing time and get comfortable in their new roles."

With the addition of Wichita State to the American Athletic Conference for the 2017-18 academic year, the league has decided to keep the conference schedule at 20 matches thus creating an imbalanced slate where some schools will have 11 home conference matches and others nine. East Carolina falls into the latter category this season.

"I think the non-conference schedule will prepare us well heading into our tough AAC slate," Torbett added. "The addition of Wichita State represents another challenging road trip. We are excited to host WSU as well."

The Pirates kick off their conference slate Sept. 22 at UCF and at USF two days later. ECU will play each school home and away with the exception of Temple and Connecticut. East Carolina will only face the Owls and Huskies on the road this season.

Without a conference tournament in place, the American Conference regular season champion will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Volleyball Championship.
