Summer Sessions: Jeremy Sheppard
July 26, 2017 | Men's Basketball
SEASON RECAP
Jeremy Sheppard gradually saw his playing time increase and eventually became the Pirates' starting point guard midway through the conference season. He started the final 10 games of the season and averaged 9.2 points and 3.5 assists per game en route to an all-rookie team campaign. He led all American freshmen in assists per game and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.3).
Â
Sheppard registered the most total assists (62) and 3-point field goals made (34) among all league rookies during conference play. He also distributed 42 assists against non-conference opponents to become the second freshman in school history with more than 100 assists.Â
Â
BY THE NUMBERS
104 – Second-most assists by a freshman in ECU history.
Â
50 – Fourth freshman in ECU history to make 50 3-pointers.
Â
32.2 – Minutes per game as a starter, second on the team behind Kentrell Barkley's 32.9 minutes per game.
Â
18 – Points scored against Tulane, which was his career-high.
Â
ECU COACH JEFF LEBO
 On Sheppard's freshman campaign
"He had a good year and was rewarded for that year by being named to The American All-Rookie Team. He was able to take hits at this level when he drove the ball to the basket and was able to get to the foul line some. We'll need more of that from him this season. He showed quickness, speed with the ball and a good understanding of how to play. He became more confident in what he can do out there [as the season progressed]. I think as his confidence increases so will his vocal leadership from the point guard position, which is an area where we need him to grow the most."
Â
On Sheppard's summer workouts
"He worked really hard in the weight room. He's gotten stronger and his body has changed. Hopefully with the added weight and increased strength he'll be able to go to some places on the floor that maybe he couldn't go last year as a freshman."
Â
On Sheppard's role in 2017-18
"He can play either guard position, but I see him with his speed and quickness with the ball playing a lot at the point for us."
