Pirates Earn ITA All-Academic Team Award; Seven Earn Scholar Athlete Honors

GREENVILLE, N.C. – For the fifth consecutive year, the East Carolina women's tennis team garnered the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team award while seven individuals were named ITA Scholar-Athletes.

"We are very proud of the team for its overall focus and discipline," head coach Tom Morris said. "This season, the team excelled on the court with our program's highest year-end national ranking and in community service efforts being recognized by the ITA with the National Community Service award. Now we are being recognized for excellence in the classroom with our overall team GPA that was 3.59 and six of our ten letterwinners had a 3.8 or better this spring."

The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All varsity letterwinners are factored into the cumulative team GPA for the 2016-17 academic year.

Celia Ruiz, Maria Gomez, Lisa Hofbauer, Nastja Rettich, Sarah Sarjoo, Meredith Smith and Betsy Zurawel all were all named ITA Scholar Athletes giving ECU a American Athletic Conference-best seven selections. USF also had seven honorees while Cincinnati and Connecticut had six selections each. Nine of the 12 AAC institutions were recognized as All-Academic Teams.
