Pirates Turn Focus To Second Intra-Squad Scrimmage
August 18, 2017 | Football
GREENVILLE, N.C. – The ECU football team finalized preparations for its second and final scrimmage of preseason camp with a lively 55-minute morning workout in helmets and shorts Friday morning at Hight Field inside the Cliff Moore Practice Complex.
The contest, which will be held on Bagwell Field inside Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium Saturday morning, will be another critical component that will help define the depth chart heading into game-plan mode for the season opener against James Madison.
"It was a good day because there was a lot of energy with a 55-minute practice before a scrimmage," Montgomery said. "Our winning edge was Focus Friday and everybody was focused for the most part. We had about three plays out there that I didn't like the focus of, but outside of that we are geared to go and have a great scrimmage Saturday.
"I kind of challenged the offense today at the end of practice just letting them know the defense had a great day in the first scrimmage. Then I challenged the defense telling them anytime you have a good day, you hear and read about it and the other team comes back and plays really well. We are getting some guys back on the field and we are starting to see some high levels of competition out wide and in the interior. We just have to come out of the scrimmage Saturday healthy, then we can focus on James Madison."
Friday's practice, the 14th for ECU, consisted of individual group work, special teams drills and team situations concentrating on fourth downs and two-point plays.
Saturday's intra-squad scrimmage, which Montgomery indicated would be closed to the public and feature between 60 to 70 plays, is designed to work on execution and fundamentals in all facets of the game.
