
Cross Country Heads North For 44th Annual Paul Short Run

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The ECU men's and women's cross country teams look to ramp up their seasons in earnest Friday morning, participating in the 44th Annual Paul Short Run at the Goodman Campus Cross Country Course on the campus of Lehigh University.

The Paul Short Run is the largest intercollegiate cross country meet in the nation with approximately 6,000 athletes from nearly 450 colleges and high schools slated to compete this year. The day-long event includes 14 races (six college, six high school and two open races) beginning at 9:30 a.m. with the men's open race and concludes with the girls' high school JV race at 5:45 p.m.

Both Pirate teams will run in the Gold Race with the men starting at 11 a.m. and the women shortly after at 11:45. The men will run an 8K while the women will run a 6K.

Last time out, the men took fourth place and the women sixth at the adidas Challenge in Cary, N.C. On the men's side, senior Bakri Abushouk was the top finisher for the Pirates for the second-straight meet as he took 13th place with a 6K time of 18:33. Junior Nick Ciaccia also finished in the top 25, taking 22nd place with a time of 18:44.

For the women, senior Sarah Hamon ended up in 25th place, crossing the finish line in the 5K at 18:01. Junior Grace Sullivan was not far behind, placing 29th with a time of 18:07.

Following the Paul Short Run, ECU begins preparations for its annual home meet – the Pirate Invitational. This year's iteration is scheduled for Oct. 13 at Overton's Lake Kristi.
